Experiment stuff.

Tonight we learned about texts and brushes that can be added to photoshop, I took a picture of some cliffs from San Diego, and brushed in some effects and a new type of font. It might be football season?

Jim Brandenburg Chased by the Light pt. 2

The second half of the Jim Brandenburg documentary chased by the light really opened up my eyes to something special about Brandenburg. Although he may not be overly forward with his emotion and passion for his work, those qualities are definitely there. There’s a part in the documentary where he sits down in his sort of stoic monotonous way, and starts to describe his experiences with nature and a relationship that’s he’s come to realize with the wolves, and with the wolves he has seen the relationship they have with the ravens. The way he described the relationship between himself and the wolves, and then the description of their relationship with the ravens was sort of chilling. It gave a real perspective on where he is mentally when it comes to his work, and he is absolutely dialed in to what he believes in, and that is nature. Which led to no surprise that his book and the story behind it inspired so many people, and started a campaign for nature preservation in his home state. The second part of this documentary really summed up the nature behind why he does his work, and why he devotes himself to what he does. It came together really nicely.

Book project spreads

A look at some possible page spreads from the “Where’s Waldo” book project.

Book Project Proposal

For my book project this semester I was originally going to try and go around San Diego County and take pictures of local breweries and the scene each one has created around it. But when my friend told me he was going to be Where’s Waldo for Halloween and had the costume on the way, I had no choice but to dedicate this project to making a real portrait Where’s Waldo book. Here’s a sample photo.

Jim Brandenburg

Jim Brandenburg is a photographer that grew up on the prairies of Minnesota. He is famous for his work in the photography of nature. His personal way of life and the way he feels about nature really translates into the way he photographs animals and other aspects of nature. He grew up in the wilderness area and felt a very strong connection to it, even stating that we all come from the Earth, and go back in to the Earth. Brandenburg’s work can be seen on the covers and insides of several National Geographic magazines, but the work of his I find the most interesting and inspirational is his work entitled “Chased by the Light- a 90 day journey.” Discontent with the hectic and often satisfactory work he was doing with National Geographic, Brandenburg set out to make the best of his work. For 90 days during the fall in the area near his studio in the prairies of he set out to only click the shutter of his camera once a day, capturing the one shot he felt was best and the one he felt most connected to. I find this inspirational because he defied what being a professional photographer is all about, and instead of having hour long shoots with hundreds to thousands of shots, where only one or two are selected, he worked all day from before sunrise to well after sunset to find one shot, and took an amazing shot every time.

Class shoot from 09/28/10. This was an awesome experience getting to shoot photos with the entire class and getting to experiment with different  backgrounds and different lighting scenarios. The images were cropped up using lightroom. Enjoy.

Rick Smolan

Smolan got an early start on life and an early start on photography. At the age of fourteen, he was already wandering the streets of new york with a camera in hand. His free-spirit style and huge dedication and yearn to be a photographer landed him in the graces of huge magazines, and huge jobs. When he was young his will landed him a job with Time magazine as the youth photographer of the year. He traveled the entire continent of South America with his history teacher at the time, and photographed anything he could. Time magazine couldn’t believe what he was doing, and his will to shoot anything and enthusiasm for his job landed him a trip to Australia to spend a week photographing the Prime Minister. Smolan continued traveling the world landing the crazy the jobs that no one else dared to take. His enthusiasm and dedication to what he does and loves was very inspirational to watch. It definitely motivated me to want to go out and take a lot of pictures, and get hired to do a job that no one else wants to do, and blow them away with the results.

Sally Mann

Sally Mann is a Photographer from Virginia that uses a older style method of photography to make large black and white photos. The style in which she captures her photos was handed down to her from a master photographer, and she treats it in that manner. She is very involved with nature and spent most of her youth living freely with nature, and it is a part of who she is, and the photographs that she takes. She  is very meticulous in her work, but at the same time likes when the work is flawed. I definitely admired that about her. She is so in to her work that you can see the effects of it on her, and her family. Her most famous work involved her family and was called Immediate Family.

Natalie Fobes

The inspiration and purpose behind Natalie Fobes’ photography came from human emotion, and the way that photography can make you feel. You can really feel the passion behind her photography just by looking at it. Almost all of her photographs make you feel for them. She always tries to capture the essence of the moment, and wants you to feel that exact moment every time you look at one of her photos. Her work includes documenting the culture behind the salmon river, weddings, and the Exxon-Valdez oil spill. She puts in years of work behind any of her projects, and her work is very inspirational.
